While Ottawa announced the suspension of House of Commons activities due to the coronavirus on Friday, Bill C-4 on the implementation of the Canada – United States – Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) received assent royal.
Parliamentarians first passed Bill C-4 at third reading Friday morning before tabling a unanimous motion to suspend activities in the Commons of the 338 MPs until April 20. The bill was subsequently sent to the Senate, which carried out the first, second and third readings the same day, without making any amendments. Passage of the bill resulted in Governor General Julie Payette receiving Royal Assent.
Recall that the Minister of Agriculture promised compensation to producers of milk, eggs and poultry under supply management for the losses suffered as a result of this trade agreement.
