Quebec Regulation on the indication of the origin of fruits and vegetables - Updated application guide

As a reminder, the Regulation respecting the indication of the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables requires that the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables from Quebec be indicated:

  • when prepackaged or sold in bulk at retailer (growers in a public market, groceries, groceries, etc.)
  • in all advertisements relating to their sale (circulars, posters, etc.)

Here are some points of the Guide to pay attention to:

  • To provide the consumer with the essential information to choose his purchase, the following expressions are allowed:
    • "Product of Quebec"
    • "Cultivated in Quebec"
    • "Harvested in Quebec"
    • "Denomination of the Quebec product" (ex: strawberries of Quebec). (page 9)
       
  • It is not mandatory that a product bearing the "Aliments du Québec" or "Aliments du Québec BIO" certification be the subject of an additional mention, since the certification already mentioned specifies, by itself, the origin of the product. (page 15)
     
  • The indication of the origin of Quebec fresh fruit and vegetables is regulated by the new Regulation respecting of the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables(page 9)

  • The indication of the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables grown outside Québec is regulated by the Regulation respecting the indication of the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables - Food Products Act. (page 13)
     
  • The origin of Quebec fresh fruits and vegetables prepackaged must be indicated on their packaging. (page 10)
     
  • It is mandatory to indicate the origin of Quebec fresh fruits and vegetables that are sold in bulk at retailer on a sign placed near the products. (page 12)
     
  • The origin of all prepackaged fruits and vegetables must be specified, regardless of their origin. (page 11)
     
  • It is mandatory to write, on a sign placed nearby, the origin of fresh fruits and vegetables that come from outside Quebec and are sold in bulk at retailer only if these products are similar to products of the province. Quebec City (page 13).
     
  • The requirements on the manner in which the origin of Quebec fruits and vegetables must be indicated at the time of sale of pre-packaged or in bulk, apply to advertising relating to their sale. (pages 14 and 15)
